10-12-10

10:40AM

Had to make a run to Kroger this morning
to get a few things to make a dessert with.
While there I found 5 pound bags of
Kroger flour for $1.28!
I picked up 2 for upcoming baking
or using in the bread machine.

Then found a 2 pound package of
beef chuck boneless blade steak
with 2 large steaks in it marked down
from $9.63 to $5.19.
I put one in a freezer bag and put into freezer.
The other I cut up into small cubes
and put into the crock.

For supper tonight I am making Beef Stew.
1 pound steak, cubed- $2.60
2 pkgs brown gravy mix (with 3 cups water)- .78 cents
2 boxes frozen carrots- free
about 5 medium potatoes, diced- .75 cents
1/2 can leftover French Onion soup- free

TOTAL COST: $4.13

My friend Kendra stopped by and
gave me a floor fan and 2 rolling carts.
The floor fan will be great especially
when I clean carpets and want them
to dry faster.
I think for the holidays I'll use the carts
as a kitchen island for my baking.
It has 2 drawers in each cart that I could
put baking supplies like decorations,
chocolate chips, cookie cutters
and all sorts of stuff in!.
I could use the racks on these shelves
as baking racks for cookies or putting
pies or cakes when they come out of the oven.
I can dream up all sorts of things for uses
for these carts.
Then once the holidays are over I can clean
them up and put in the kids closets
and use the bottom part as a shoe/boot rack
and drawers for undies and socks.
I could also put one in the hallway for
boots during the Winter months
and use the drawers for hats, gloves & scarves.
It rolls so I could even put it over a register
and use as a drying rack
to dry wet items like boots or gloves!
I LOVE PRACTICAL THINGS
that have many uses!!!!

Wowza! I’m not sure if this is a mistake or what… but currently, you can head on over to WomanWithin.com and purchase $50 or more worth of items, then use coupon code WW48580 to get $50 off your purchase of $50 or more! They have lots of Tees priced at just $5, so you could potentially score 10 Tees for just the cost of shipping! And they do have lots of other items too.

I ordered 10 $5.00 t-shirts in boy colors
thinking I would get the boys some t-shirts for Christmas.
All through the ordering process it kept telling me after
I entered the promotional code that my shipping was free
and that my balance was $0.
Well I am now hearing they just changed the code
to only be $20 off a $50 order and that change must of went into
effect while I was ordering because when I sent the payment
to them my order went from $0 to $36.99!!

I should have done this earlier today because some people got
in on that deal before it changed.

But anyway I immediately called the 1-800 number
for customer service and canceled the whole order!!

This pisses me off!!
That through this whole order up until the time
I sent payment it said I owed $0!!
GGGRRRRRR!!!

I very rarely buy stuff online and the one time
I do it got all F'ed up!!

Easy supper tonight.
Why, because
I have been enjoying my day of being home,
no shopping, no going anywhere, no housework,
so figured something simple to wind down the day.
Every now and then I need a day off!!

1 pound hamburger - free
frozen corn- .60 cents
bread & butter .12 cents

TOTAL: $1.72
Serves 5 @ .34 cents a serving

.
.
I've been craving Mexican food.
Thank you Food channel and Guy Fieri with
the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show
that keeps me
up late most nights. Then I find myself wandering into
the kitchen for a midnight snack and a rag because
my mouth is drooling.
All I can say is I want his job!!
So maybe here in the near future I'll be making something
Mexican.
So here are a few recipes for some
flat breads.

Taco Bell Chalupa bread Indian fry bread

2 1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
1 cup milk
oil (for deep frying)
To make Indian Fry Bread Mix dry ingredients together.
Cut in shortening; then add milk.
Shape dough into a long cylinder; cut into 8 equal parts.
Flour hands, then work the pieces into 6″ tortillas.
Fry in oil until golden brown..

FLATBREAD (Like Taco Bell Gorditas)

This recipe looked really good til they
started adding anchovies, yuck!
But I will still use it as a guide.

Both these recipes could be used in a bread machine.
Use the dough or pizza dough cycle like mine has.

Chicken Ranch Gordita from Taco Bell

. Gordita Baja – Beef.
8:45PM

Ok this is weird, I just picked up 4 Taste Of Home
magazines and started looking through them
and found a quick and easy flatbread recipe
for tacos.
You need a can of Grands biscuits
Roll each biscuit out into a 6 inch circle.
In a small skillet, over medium heat, cook each
flattened biscuit for 30-60 seconds on each side.
HERE it is on TOH.

10-10-10

Hey, it's 10-10-10 and it's almost 10:00am.

I forgot to mention a few things yesterday
that happened with surveys and such.

At first I had gotten an email from HouseParty saying
I qualified for the Brewstation HouseParty.
BUT then they sent an another email saying it was a mistake
that it was sent out accidentally.
They said to make it up to me they would send
me a Brewstation offer after Nov. 6th.
Anxious to see what kind of offer it is.

Then I got a online survey I did and when completed
it asked if I would want to do a telephone
survey for $75!!
I said yes, so am waiting to see if that happens.

10:30AM

This morning's breakfast is
biscuits & gravy.
2 pkgs country gravy- .80 cents
1 tube of biscuits- .40 cents
Total Cost for Breakfast- $1.20

Me & Tony aren't eating breakfast so will
take remaining of white country gravy
and make potato soup out of it.

---------------------------------------------

Here in a little bit we're heading to Kroger
to get Tony's prescriptions.
I might pick up a few items for the
dessert recipes I'll be making for the contests.
This sucks because I won't be able to share
any with the kids classrooms due to
them not accepting classroom treats anymore!
Then once home I'll continue my housework.
I try to set a goal each day of what I want done.
-finish 1 more load of laundry
-put laundry away
-clean living & dining room
-sweep & mop kitchen floor
-vacuum & carpet clean
-make Halloween cookies for contest
-make potato soup
(peel, cube & boil potatoes)

-----------------------------------

I thought this was cute, lol.
.
TurkeyToesNFFThanksgivingFavor.

-------------------------------------------

1:30pm

Just back from Kroger.
Now working on lunch.

Potato Soup

6 small- medium potatoes, peeled & cubed- .75 cents
leftover country gravy- free
1 pkg smoked sausage, cut up- $1.35
1/2 pkg pepperoni, cut up- .50 cents
small bag of broccoli- free
1 small onion, cut up- .20 cents

TOTAL COST: $2.80
don't know servings yet.

To save time:
-when boiling potatoes
and broccoli I throw them together
in the same pot.
Also saves on cleaning an extra pot!
-I threw sausage, pepperoni
& onions all in one skillet to fry
at the same time.
-To stretch out the country gravy
I put about a cup of milk, some chicken
bullion & a couple tablespoons of flour
in a shaker cup then poured it into
the sausage mixture while cooking.
added 1/2 cup more milk to make creamier.
Then added in the country gravy & stirred
in the potatoes & broccoli.

Either I was starving or that
soup was pretty darn good because
I ended up have two bowls of it!

.
--------------------------

4:00PM

Starting to wear out.
Got kitchen floor swept & mopped.
Then vacuumed the living, dining & hallway
then carpet cleaned it all.
Got towels off the clothesline that I hung
yesterday evening. Got them folded up
and put away.

Will have remaining soup for supper.
Then work on getting clean clothes put away
and some ready for tomorrow morning.
Yeah I don't have to worry about making
school lunches for tomorrow.
You just don't know what a relief that will be
from now on!!

Maybe here in a few I'll go make
some chocolate chip cookies for the contest.
Once done I'll post some pics for you to see
and tell me which one you like best because
I can only enter one.
I already have my ideas drawn out onto
paper and asked the kids which one they like
just from the drawings. So we'll see if they change
their mind once they see them made.

---------------------------------

5:50pm

Here's the three types of spooky
cookies I made.
I don't think anyone liked the worm cookies
so it's between the skulls and I haven't got
a name for the other one, the one with the teeth.
These had to be easy enough that a 3 year could
help decorate!
And it wasn't easy coming up with something
made out of chocolate chip cookie dough!
.
..I'm looking at other entries and are starting
to wonder if people even read the rules
to this contest. Like I said it was supposed to be
easy enough for a 3 year old to help decorate
and it had to be an original design.
Many of these I see I couldn't imagine a 3 year
old helping with and others are copycats
of things I have already seen.
Everything has to be edible also!
You can go HERE and see other entries.
Then click on the tab that says contest.
Then "click here to find out more"
Then on the tab that says "view entries"

People are seeing the main part of the contest that says:

"Create a Halloween-themed Baking Activity using NESTLÉ TOLL HOUSE Refrigerated Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Submit the name of your project, step-by-step instructions and a picture of your fun creation. Ten lucky finalists will be chosen by NESTLÉ. Votes from our NESTLÉ baking community will determine the winners"

But I wonder if they read the part that says:
"Read The Official Rules"
It is very important that when you enter
any contest to read this!!

Here is what it says:

-
Entries must meet all of the following requirements or they will be disqualified

-Each entry must use Nestle® Toll House® Refrigerated Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough to create a Halloween themed baked creation.

-The skill level of the Baked Creation must be such that 3-12 year old children could participate in making the Baked Creation, and the look and taste must be appealing to that age group.

-
Each entry must be completely edible: Non-edible items such as craft sticks are acceptable, provided they can be removed prior to consumption, or do t they affect consumption or the safety of the Baked Creation.

-
Each entry must be original and created by the entrant, unpublished, the sole property of the submitter, and not previously submitted in any other contest. Entry must not violate any 3rd party rights including, but not limited to copyrights, trademark or right of publicity. Entry must not highlight any third party trademarks, company names or logos. Do not use imitations of famous people or characters from books, movie or television shows, etc.

-
Judging: Two rounds of judging will be conducted. Entries in each round will be judged as follows (the “Judging Criteria”):

Creativity/Originality 40%
Clarity of instructions/Ease of re-creation 40%
Relevance to the theme 20%

-Round One: The NESTLE TOLL HOUSE Marketing Team will review all eligible entries submitted and select ten (10) finalists.

-
Round Two: The ten (10) finalists selected in Round One will be posted on www.Facebook.com/TollHouse for consumer voting. Voting will run from 10/21/10 12:01 a.m. ET through 11:59 p.m. ET 10/28/10. Consumers will be asked to vote for the Baked Creation based on the Judging Criteria, with the top three (3) finalists chosen by voting consumers. Limit one (1) vote per person per day. In the event of a tie, winner will be determined by NESTLE TOLL HOUSE Marketing Team in its sole discretion. Winners will be notified on or about 10/29/10.

Now after reading this go back and check
out some of the entries.
I see allot that will be disqualified
because they did not read the above!!

I think it also helps to use other products
made by that manufacturer, just my opinion,
because I think this recipe is a way they
can advertise to sell more cookie dough.
So I added Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chips
to my recipes when decorating!

I did that when coming up with
the recipe for Betty Crocker.
Along with their cookie mixes
I also included Betty Crocker frosting!
Like I said I think it helps to sell more of
their products!
I had always wanted to go into advertising
so I see these contests in different ways
other than just baking :0)
I see it from the manufacture's point of view!

---------------------------

7:35pm

So far three votes for mouth cookies
and 1 for skull.

Thinking of a name for mouth cookies.
How about "Cookie Bites"?

-------------------------------

Found this tip that I also do:

After Halloween, watch at stores for 90% off holiday items.
Stock up on multi-packs of party favors that can be given out
as next year's treats. Be creative and think outside the candy
box!
Beth in Galesville, WI.
from Dollar Stretcher

I also stock up on candy at that price.
I use it throughout the year
and even when the next Halloween rolls around.
Those candy corns used in my cookies were
from last years 90% off sales!!
Still tastes just as good and no
discoloration!
Watch out for chocolate candy bars
and keeping them that long,
unless you are freezing them,
the chocolate can sometimes turn white.

Went down to the flea market this morning.

Here's a couple deals we got.

Tony picked up a new 2 GB camera

card for my birthday for $6.00

He saved $4.00 because Walmart has

them for about $10 (plus tax!)

.------------------------------------------------------

I needed cereal and found large boxes of

Corn Pops and Sugar Smacks for $1.00 each.

When buying at a flea market always

check the expiration dates on food.

By buying the cereal at the flea market at

a price that I would normally buy cereal for,

it saved me time from waiting for sales

and matching up coupons.

.

I also noticed on the boxes of Corn Pops

it said $5.00 worth of coupons inside each box!

They don't expire til March 2011!

Which is a good thing because the coupons

are found inside the bags of cereal.

.I refilled my cereal storage container

so was able to glance at what coupons

was inside!

.

Christopher found some old train cars & engines

while at the flea market.

The guy had $1.00 each on them but

came down to .25 cents each!!

I believe these metal Midgetoys are

from the 1950's!

.Here is an example of what

that .25 cent investment was worth.

This one is $13 on Ebay.------------------------------------------

12:45PM

Well I need to get started on housework.

This is my goal for today:

laundry,

removing skins & bones from chicken

that I cooked in the crocks yesterday

and prepare for freezer,

regular house cleaning,

then I want to work on putting some Summer

clothes away and rotating and getting

out the Winter clothes.

------------------------------------

I saw this tip for couch cushions that slide

out after people sit on them.

I had that problem and guess what,

this is exactly what I did before even reading this tip!

I didn't pay $15 though as I found my grippy

stuff at Dollar Tree or other Dollar stores.

from budgethomemaking

.Dear Ladies, since I bought our new couch three years ago I have hated it
because the seat cushions constantly slid out. Every time someone would sit
on the couch I had to get them pushed back in, everyday, sometimes several
times a day. We tried, but couldn't think of a way to secure them to
permanently stay where they belonged. But now I'm so happy! I googled the
problem and found many others are having the same trouble with their sofa
cushions and people were posting the solution. It's about $15.00 worth of
the rubbery padding sheets that you put under area rugs to stop slipping.
You place that under the sofa seat cushions and the problem is over.
Yippee! I'm so thrilled I can stop hating my sofa and love it instead.
Just wanted to share in case anyone on the BH list might have this
aggravating trouble.
Smiles, Barbara .

Kodak Moment.

This is the view we saw from our kitchen window.

Jonathan and a friend were laying on the hill

where you couldn't see nothing but their feet and legs.

.-------------------------------------

I probably won't have too many

coupon & sales match ups for this

week unless I think it's really cheap or free

and worth mentioning.

I won't have lunches to pack the rest

of the school year, woo hoo, so

don't need to buy for that!

We are stocked to the hilt with everything

from food to non food items!

So this week will be the basics like

milk, eggs, bread, pop and

whatever else I may need to work

on these recipe contests I am doing.

Well I need to run down and change the laundry over.

Boy, having my new laundry bar by my washer/dryer

sure helps me out allot!

I use it to put extra clothes and hangers on.

Then I have a free standing clothes rack I use

to put clothes on straight from the dryer,

then take upstairs to hang in closets.

I love anything that simplifies my life!

I would like to enter a Fall Foliage contest.

Friend & family, can you help me decide

which photo I should enter?

You can only enter 1 photo.

Here are the ones I took you can

choose from:

I narrowed it down.

I don't know how much kids are

age.

Dirty Oven Racks? Try this hint to get them clean!
.
To easily clean oven racks, place the racks together in an extra large garbage bag. Spray oven cleaner inside the bag. Close tightly, and allow it to sit. After an hour (or even overnight), remove the racks from the bag and wipe clean. No scrubbing.

10:30AM

3 days later and I am finally able
to get my 10 lbs of chicken in the crock pots!
It took that long to thaw out.
I still have 60 more pounds of chicken
in the freezer!!
I'll cook up 10 pounds at a time in the crocks
then put cooked chicken into zip bags and put
back into the freezer.
This makes my life so much easier when
it comes to making meals by having
the chicken cooked ahead of time!

Also hidden in my freezer is a 20+ pound turkey
I bought last November.
Each year I usually buy an extra turkey when on sale
since I am usually the one who has Thanksgiving at our house.
That way should I not be able to afford a turkey for the upcoming year I know I have one tucked away in the freezer!
I always like to think ahead when possible
even if that means a year ahead!
A turkey will last up to a year if
frozen immediately after purchasing!

I see Nestle Tollhouse is having a contest
for creating a spooky Halloween cookie

from their chocolate chip cookie dough.
The prize is $2,500!
It has to be an original design
and be easy enough for a 3-12 year old child to make.
So I'm gonna try to think something up for this
because who knows, lol.
But what the heck can you make out
of chocolate chip cookies??
HMMMM!
I have an idea for a sugar cookie
but not chocolate chip!
Chocolate chip cookies spread out on the pan
so this one will be fun!

ohhh I got an idea for one!
Ain't saying til I make and submit it though!

The entries, which can be viewed online,
don't look like much yet. They eyeball cookies
look cute but can a 3 year old do it?
probably not!

-----------------------------

Then I think I might have a recipe
to enter into a Taste Of Home's contest

Out-of-the-Box Desserts

Send us your best dessert fixes made with mixes, and you could win $500!

It never hurts to enter recipe contests!
That's coming from someone who is a
regular baker and has won a couple!

-------------------------------------

11:30AM

Tummy is growling!
What to have? Taking a peek into freezer.
Found some leftover breakfast casserole
that I'll warm in the microwave.
Topping with some Franks Red Hot sauce!
That $#!%'$ good on everything!
I get a kick out of that radio commercial
every time I hear it!

Well if this weekend stays nice like
the weather man says it's going to then
we might start weatherproofing the fence.

--------------------------------

Just back from Kroger.
I got some stuff to make cookies
and some items to make a recipe for the boxed dessert contest.

What to do?
I have about 5 ideas for the cookie contest
and you can only submit one!
How do I narrow it down to one?
$2500 is a stake here y'all
and I can't decide which one to make
and enter!

About Me

My photo
My name is Sherry, 39yrs old, from Columbus, Ohio. I am married, a SAHM, and have 3 children ages 9, 10 and 20. I have been frugal/thrifty all my life. I would like to share on this blog how we get by day to day on one income with a family of 5 with a dog and a cat. You will also hear about my everyday gripes about daily life and the cost of living. Hubby says my favorite saying is, "and that is another thing that pisses me off!"
