10-26-10

9:55AM

Just back from Kroger.
I ended up going over budget this
week by $6.27.
I like to stay within $45 for groceries each week.
BUT I had a couple extra expenses
like getting stuff for Tony's potluck
tomorrow and I picked up some more
toilet paper since I could get it for cheap.
I didn't really need any at the moment
but figured it's something we will use
and better get it now while cheap
rather paying more for it later.

TOTAL BEFORE: $78.43

I PAID: $26.15

TOTAL SAVED: $52.28

My best deal at Kroger today:
4 boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal AND 4 boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios Total of 8 boxes of cereal ALL 8 FOR $1.16!!!!!!

I didn't list everything I got.
Below are my best deals.

3 (1.2 pound) packs ground turkey- $1.39 each

2 packs double roll Quilted Northern- .99 cents each

4 dozen medium Kroger eggs- .50 cents each

3 packs BallPark Franks- .56 cents each

2 boxes Nescafe Coffee singles- .19 cents each

14 Yoplait Yogurt- .37 cents each

----------------------------------

TOTALS FOR WEEK
for both Meijer & Kroger

TOTAL PRICE BEFORE: $144.88
TOTAL I PAID: $51.27
TOTAL SAVED THIS WEEK: $93.61

I saw this on the bottom of my receipt for Kroger.
It shows how much I saved this year so
far by using my Kroger Plus Card.
That's just by using the card and does
NOT include how much I saved with coupons!
By using your card you get the sales
price. Don't use it and pay full price.

I haven't checked out this deal below.

10:40AM

Winds are starting to pick up.
Tony just called from work to say
a lil tree in front of an apartment we used
to live in blew over.
When we lived there we had a severe storm that
brought down a large branch off that tree
and onto our cars. The groundsmen came over
with chain saws and was gonna cut the whole
tree down. I saved the tree back then by stopping
them from doing so. But it looks like it finally bit
the dust today :0(

10-25-10

7:45AM

I'm watching Good Day Columbus
on Fox 28 and they said now would
be a good time to start clipping coupons
because the price of groceries are going up!

Didn't they just start to come back down with
prices due to the gas sky rocketing at one time.
A gallon of milk was almost, if not, $4 a gallon!
That was about the time I started couponing.

I know I saw one time on tv the price of meat was
going up due to the fact farmers are making way
to farm corn rather than cows due to
the demand of corn for fuel.

It's always something!!

-------------------------------

---------------------------------

5:30PM

Just got supper and a Pop Tart dessert made.

Earlier today I purchase an En-Cor
salisbury steak entree and that's what I used.
I toasted up some multi grain bread.
I placed a piece of toast into the bottom
of a bowl, then a piece of salisbury steak on top,
topped it with a half piece of american cheese,
gravy from entree, another piece of toast,
salisbury steak, cheese & gravy.
.
Reminds me of something you would find
at Bob Evans. We've been eating this for 12 years
and it's really good. You could also
use the meatloaf family entree as well.

---------------------------------

.

.
Tomorrow we have a wind advisory
from 10AM to 8PM.
Winds up to 50mph!
North of Franklin county
could see 60mph winds.
So secure everything this evening
in your yard so it doesn't blow away!
When we had the wind storm it was
about 75mph.

-------------------------------

7:00Pm

Well ya'll I might retire to the bedroom early tonight.
Just finished my shopping list for Kroger for tomorrow.
A guy was supposed to of come to look at the
Explorer tonight and we're still waiting for him
to show up. I get tired of weeding out idiots
off of Craigslist!!
If he's a no show tonight then we'll move onto
someone else.
My body is hurting pretty good this eve.
Just popped a couple ibuprofen and gonna
go lay down.

--------------------------------

Please don't forget to vote daily for
my Cookie Bites cookie on Toll House!

I can see who of my facebook friends and family
votes for me :0). I just don't know how
many votes I have til it's over with.

And if you find time,
please vote daily on my Pop Tart Tiramisu
for the Kellogg's Pop Tart contest.

Need to win because Daddy needs a new pair of shoes!
No, just not saying that as a Las Vegas phrase
they say before playing games, lol.
He really does!
My honey got a prescription for a pair of
prescription shoes and 4 sets of insoles for his diabetic feet
when he saw a podiatrist not long ago.
I'm sure we will have to pay out of pocket
first and come up with that money
then turn it into our insurance to see if
they will cover any of the expense.

1:00PM

Do you know if you drop an empty soap
bucket on your toe it hurts,
hurts with extreme throbbing pain for about
the next half hour.
It'll make you growl and have some evil looking
faces. It'll make you pound on counter tops
and run around the yard to try to relieve the pain.
Then after the 30 minutes go by, the toe
starts to feel numb. I'm thinking to myself,
why go numb now? This could have happened
during the 5 seconds it took for the pain to travel
from my toe to my brain to signal that
I should be experiencing extreme pain.
.
----------------------------------------------

1:45PM

Running around like a chicken with it's toe cut off,
I mean head cut off, lol!

Have supper in the crock.
Cut up a round steak and added some
leftover onion soup I had in the freezer.
Will add some gravy to it along with
maybe some green pepper slices
and put over some Asian Helper (betty crocker)
beef fried rice.

Kids got their bedrooms tidied up
and I vacuumed again.
This time of years sucks when people
bring in leaves on their shoes!
Does your vacuum ever stink when using it?
Mine does so I tore up a dryer sheet and put
in the canister. I have a bagless vac.
Smelled good while vacuuming.

Got laundry started.

Still need to work on writing up grocery lists
and getting coupons rounded up for this week.

Got a couple coupons for some cheap lunches
this week at fast food joints.

Got an email with a coupon for a free
spaghetti from Fazolis with a drink purchase.
For 3 of us to go out to lunch Monday:
$2.99 pepperoni spaghetti (split to make 2 meals)
Free spaghetti meal
.50 cent drink (with senior discount)
free 2 waters
endless bread sticks

Total cost for 3 people: $3.49!!

-------------------

Here's another deal that's on Facebook:
I was able to print out three coupons.
The coupon says limit 1 coupon per customer.
So for the price of 3- 32 ounce drinks
(that's a BIG drink!)
you can get 3 meals!!
Not sure how much the drinks are.

------

In the USA Weekend insert of the Columbus Dispatch
you can find a coupon for KFC.
Free Doublicious sandwich with
the purchase of a 30 ounce drink.

Here’s a yummy new coupon for ya! Head over to the A&W Facebook page, “like” them, and you’ll be able to print a coupon good for a FREE Big Taste Meal with the purchase of a 32 oz. drink at regular price (valid through November 1st). Each meal consists of a sandwich and a regular fry. Sounds good to me! From Hip2Save.

9:20PM

For about the last hour I have been making
a shopping list for Meijer.
Got some coupons organized for a Kroger
trip but haven't made a list for that store yet.

Almost bedtime.
Still need to run down and get clothes
out of dryer and get hung up.
Then lay out clothes for everyone tomorrow.

The weekend is almost over with thank goodness.
Tony had the pager this week and will turn
it back in tomorrow.
It's been pretty good this week with not too many pages.
Actually Tony is out on a page as I speak.

Well I'm going to deal with my laundry
then wait for Tony to get home.
Let you know how my Meijer trip turns out tomorrow.

When we picked up some Big K 2 liters
of pop the other day someone accidentally
got a regular pop. I won't let them have it
due to what the label says.

Regular Orange 2 liter soda

8 fl. ounce serving
140 calories
25mg sodium
32g carbs
31 grams sugar
caffeine free

Diet Grape 2 liter soda

8 fl oz serving
0 calories
20mg sodium
0 carbs
0 sugar
caffeine free

Diet pop does not have High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Regular pop has these bad things:
High Fructose Corn Syrup and
brominated vegetable oil.
Not sure what that is but doesn't sound good.

-----------------------------------------------

You will hear me talk allot about what foods are
good for you and what is not.
The only way I can learn is to take notes
and let it start sinking into my head.

Eating fish is one of the best meats you can have.
My guess would be to buy tuna in water
rather than oil.
Fish is loaded with Omega-3 which is really really good
for you and your heart!

I have in front of me a can of 5 ounce can Bumble Bee light tuna
and a 2.5 ounce pouch of Bumble Bee light tuna.

each serving is around 2- 2.5 ounces for each.
By looks you would think the pouch tuna would be better.
BUT after doing some comparison it looks
as though the canned tuna is better for you!

Pouch Tuna
70 calories
0 fat
35mg cholesterol
240mg sodium
180mg potassium
0 carbs

Canned Tuna
50 calories
0 fat
30mg cholesterol
180mg sodium
90mg potassium
0 carbs

While canned tuna has lesser potassium
I feel it is better for you due to lower calories,
cholesterol and sodium.

----------------------------------

One of my next projects will
be to find a healthier cereal that the kids
will like. This will not be fun.
Have you seen how many cereals are
in a cereal isle???

Here is what I am currently reading
Choosing Cereal by Dr. Sears

How many grams of sugar should you be eating
a day?

The USDA says you should not have more than 40 grams of sugar a day. One can of soda has about 40 grams of sugar.

Here are some I am considering:
And now that I've researched some I got
to thinking, hey aren't most of these
the kinds of cereal you could get when
you had W.I.C.?
So if you've ever done that program
for women, infants & children
think about what you used to have you buy
because those items are good for you!

Sometimes if the cereal is too bland for the kids
I might add a teaspoon of Splenda to the cereal
to sweeten it up.

Honey Bunches of Oats 7 grams sugar--
(Yummy! One of my favorites! And I know Kroger has
their brand of it but don't know how many
grams of sugar for their brand but will find out)
Honey Nut Cheerios 9 grams sugar--
Cinnamon Life Cereal 8 grams sugar--
Multi-Grain Cheerios 6 grams sugar--
Berry Kix 8 grams sugar--
Kix 2 grams sugar--
Honey Gram Life Cereal 7 grams sugar--
Cheerios 1 gram sugar--
Wheaties 4 grams sugar--

----------------------------------

2:00PM

Kids went to a birthday party down the street
so me and Tony went to Kroger to get a few things.
While there I found a bunch of
mulitgrain bread on clearance for .49 cents!!
Also found some Kroger brand Frosted Flakes
for .79 cents manager special!
It has 12 grams sugar per serving.
I have some regular corn flake cereal I could
mix this with to cut that sugar in half per serving!
So there's a thought.
Still keep your kids favorite
cereal but mix in half of a similar cereal that's healthier to cut down the sugar intake!

-----------------------------------------

8:00PM

Just pretty much kicking back and chillin today.
Got most of my laundry done earlier this week
so won't have as much to do tomorrow.
Also earlier this week I went
around tidying the living & kitchen/dining areas
and did some vacuuming.
I did manage to wipe down the walls today.
With kids playing outside in the dirt during the
Summer months they always seem to have dirty
hands which end up making prints all over
the walls and door jambs.
This evening I decided to work on getting
my coupons organized. I am soooooooo
far behind with them.

Last week we went to a church sale.
I had bought 2 over the door clear plastic
shoe organizers for .75 cents for both.
At the time of getting them I didn't have
a plan of what to use them for.
Well I came up with and idea of what
to use one of them for tonight.
In the past couple months I haven't been
taking my coupon binder with me to the store.
Instead I just made lists and took whatever
coupons I was using with me.
Sooooo I needed to find a way to sort
my coupons at home without the coupon binder.
Something that was easily accessible, can
move anywhere I need it to go and doesn't
take up much needed space around here.
So here was my idea that I came up with
.
I labeled each pocket with a different coupon
category. If company should come over
for holidays or whatever I can easily
transport this to the back of a bedroom door out of sight!
Or I could take it down, fold or roll it up,
and put it underneath the couch out of sight!

10:30AM

Got supper in the crock.
I put in the crock a can of
no sugar added apple pie filling
and 4 pork ribs.
Once done I will remove the pork ribs
from crock and chop up the apples.
To the apple pie filling I will then add
a box of stuffing and mix together.
Side includes corn & honey glazed carrots.
Serve ribs with chicken gravy made from
pouches.

I removed my Pop Tart dessert from
freezer to allow it to thaw some so
I can remove it from the pan.
Will have this for dessert tonight.

POP TART TIRAMISU
by Sherry

8 ounce cream cheese, softened
small box vanilla instant pudding
1 1/2 cup milk
1 cup whipped topping
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
1/2 cup strong coffee
6 Frosted Chocolate Chip Pop Tarts

In a 5 1/2" x 10" loaf pan place a piece of tin foil
into bottom of pan and have it hang over the sides.
You will use this to help you remove the Tiramisu
from the pan later on.

In a medium sized bowl beat together
cream cheese, pudding mix and milk.
Stir in chocolate chips.

In bottom of loaf pan place
2 1/2 chocolate chip Pop Tarts.
Pour 1/4 cup of strong coffee over the Pop Tarts.
Spoon 1 1/2 cups of the cream cheese mixture
over top the pop tarts.
Then spoon 1/2 cup of whipped topping
evenly over the cream cheese mixture.
Then repeat one more layer of
2 1/2 pop tarts,
1/4 cup coffee,
1 1/2 cups cream cheese mixture and
1/2 cup whipped topping.

Pulse remaining chocolate chip Pop Tart
in food processor until crumbly.
Sprinkle over top whipped cream.

Place Tiramisu into freezer overnight.
Before serving allow to thaw out for about
15 minutes. Run knife along edge that has
no tin foil.
Grab sides of tinfoil and carefully remove from pan.
Remove tinfoil from Tiramisu
and place on serving plate.
Slice into 10 servings.

---------------------------------

Even after looking for Pumpkin Pop
Tarts at Kroger & Walmart I have still
have not been able to find them.
I have had to resort to plan B
and use the cinnamon Pop Tarts instead
for my next recipe.

National Consumer Panel

I got this in my email today.
It's about the Neilson home scanner
I signed up for awhile ago
and have been waiting for a spot
to open up with them.

"We hope you’re still interested, because there’s currently availability on the panel for a household just like yours!"

If you are interested in becoming a member:

Become a Member

Homescan has changed its name to National Consumer Panel.
(If you have already signed up as a Homescan panelist, please
do not register again.
) For anyone new, if you'd like to become a member of the National Consumer Panel, please complete our
online registration (Only one member per household,) Once we receive your household information, you will be placed on a Reserve Status Waiting List. Households are then randomly selected to join the panel. This ensures that the panel truly reflects the country's diverse population. Thanks for your interest.

About Us
The National Consumer Panel is a "mini-U.S.A.," representing millions of Americans. By scanning the barcodes on their purchases and completing interesting surveys, panelists truly make their opinions count in the consumer marketplace.

If you are accepted as a panel member, you will be sent a small hand-held scanner and will scan all the bar codes of everything you purchase. Once a week, you’ll transmit this
information and you’ll earn points which can be redeemed for a variety of items from the Gift Catalog.

If you try out the program and find it is not for you, you can easily ship back the handheld scanner using a postage-paid box they provide.

Click to verify BBB accreditation and to see a BBB report.

I remember having a home scanner to scan bar codes
about 17 years ago, lol.
So figured I'd try it again if given the opportunity
since I have a little more time to put into it.
So we'll see in the near future if I get one.
I filled out a small survey and they said
they would get back to me.
Looks like now you can transmit your purchases
over the internet. Years ago I remember
recording all my purchases and having
to hold the scanner up to the phone
to transmit it. So it sounds a little easier.

-----------------------------------------

I have been trying to find ways
of incorporating healthier snacks into
our lifestyle.
The kids like cookies so I had to find an
alternative to sandwich cookies:

2 sandwich cookies per serving
160 calories
50 calories from fat
6 grams of total fat
1.5 grams saturated fat
2 grams trans fat
11 grams of sugar
130mg sodium
24 grams carbs

Vitamins:
4% iron

2 lb package of cookies $1.78

and of course 2 cookies aren't
enough to satisfy anyone for an after school snack
so they usually end up having 4
which means double the totals above.

Here is my alternative starting today.

Animal Crackers
16 animal crackers per serving
120 calories per serving
15 calories from fat
2 grams of total fat
0 saturated fat
0 trans fat
7 grams of sugar
105mg sodium
25 grams carbs

Vitamins:
10% Thiamin
6% Niacin
6% Iron
6% Riboflavin
10% Thiamine
8% Folate

2lb package of animal crackers $1.98

By being allowed 16 animal crackers each
they feel like they are getting allot.
Plus they are fun shaped animals
that appeal to kids.
Plus they like to dunk them in milk
which is also a way to get them
to drink more white milk.
In order to have milk with cookies
they have to finish the glass of milk
once done dipping cookies.
.
.

--------------------------------------------

5:20PM

Tonight's supper.

--------------------------------------------

6:00PM

You can now go to Kellogg's Mixing Bowl
and vote for my Pop Tart Tiramisu recipe I just posted :0)

I'm not sure if you have to sign up
for the web site or not.
You'll just have to go there and see.
It is really good and no one would even
know the recipe had Pop Tarts in it.
To lower the fat and sugar use
fat free cream cheese
and sugar free pudding.
Or chose another flavor of Pop Tarts
that says Low Fat on the front
or ones with extra fiber.

----------------------------------------

8:00-9:00pm

I have been watching a show on Discovery
Health channel called Freaky Eaters.
On there they have a nutrition specialist
and I have learned to help make your diet better
is to try to replace foods you already eat with
healthier versions.
Here is an example:
On one show a guy was addicted to eating
hamburgers.
The health adviser gave him a few options
of things like tofu burgers or turkey burgers.
Instead of ketchup she had him use salsa.
Cheese, also found on burgers, are loaded with fat so try to choose a lower fat version of cheese you like.
Mustard is also a better option when it
comes to using condiments.
Ketchup is loaded with sugar
and regular mayo is loaded with fat.

Changing our diet is hard and is a slow work
in progress but I am trying and learning as
I go.
Whenever I find replacement foods for foods
we are so used to eating I will post them
along with the nutritional value of what we
were eating before and what I have found to
eat now.
Yes, it does take a few more extra minutes while
in the store to check those nutritional labels
but they are there for a reason.

I have always wondered when a label says no sugar
or no sugar added on the label then why is sugar still
listed in the nutritional information.
I figured it had something to do with natural
sugars produced by fruits and I was correct.
The same goes for salt.

When jars, boxes, bottles, cans and so on
say no this added or less this or reduced
that,
then the next thing you need to watch for on
the label is how many carbs that food item has.
Because carbs are also sugars and starches
found in foods to give us energy.
Too much is a bad thing!
The liver digests carbohydrates by breaking them down into simple sugars, or glucose, which stimulates the production of insulin in the pancreas.

White breads, white pastas and white rice are full
of starches. So think white next time you shop
and know that this is bad for you!

You need to buy things with whole grains.
Just because something may say wheat bread
doesn't mean it's good for you.
It's just flour that hasn't been bleached.
Make sure the label says WHOLE grains
like WHOLE wheat!

How many carbs should you be consuming daily?

Here's my homemade soap from yesterday.

It gelled up nicely. Not too much though.

You should still shake the bottle some

before using.

I filled the 112 load Sun bottle with my homemade

mixture. I only used about 1/3rd of my bucket!

I funneled it into the container by using

a top cut off a 20 ounce pop bottle as a funnel.

I washed a blanket with it and still have to

put it in the dryer with my fabric softener sponges.

Will let you know the results of how it turns out

this evening.

I want to check to see if it got clean and

if it smells good.

Tonight's supper:

Chicken Hash.

Fried in a skillet with potatoes, chicken,

Can't believe it's not butter and Italian dressing,

salt & pepper.

I know everything I make anymore seems to be

with chicken. I am trying to make meals

from our freezer and pantry. I have so much chicken

I need to use it ain't even funny.

I am hoping that my brother can get me a deer this

year to stock our freezer with. But before hand

I need to kinda use up what's in the freezer first.

I look at it this way-

Deer is more healthy for you with less fat

and is not pumped full of steroids and hormones

like those meats found at the butcher shop.

Plus they are free roaming which means they

eat grass, leaves, berries & what not.

Unlike cows which now a days are forced to eat

corn which is not really something a cow

should be eating to begin with!

And lastly,

I can try to afford $1.00 per pound to

get the meat processed as opposed to

the stupid price per pounds at the butcher shop!

Coming up with ideas for another Pop Tart recipe.

There is supposed to be a limited edition Pop Tart

called Pumpkin Pie. I did not see it at Kroger.

If you see this somewhere could you please

let me know as my next recipe will be made from it.

10-20-10

7:30-8:00AM

Before getting the kids off to school
I was able to make up a batch homemade of liquid laundry soap!
It was very simple and quick to do.

I miscalculated how much it cost to make
because I didn't realize you had to cut
the bar soap into thirds and only use one third per batch.

It cost me about $1.25 to make about
180 loads of homemade liquid laundry detergent!!
That included me using the Dollar Store
brand of Oxyclean in my detergent!!

I cut the large bar of Zote into thirds.
Use only one third of the bar per batch made.
This bar soap has somewhat of a lemony scent.
.
Next grate the soap into small slivers.
.
It makes approximately 2 cups.
.
Next add 4 cups hot water to a sauce
pan along with the grated soap.
Over medium heat stir until soap has completely melted.
.
In a 5 gallon bucket, or an empty soap bucket,
add 1 cup washing soda, 1/2 cup Borax,
and 1/3 cup Oxyclean (optional).
Fill bucket almost full of hot tap water
and add your melted soap water.
Stir until completely combined and
powders are dissolved.
Now allow to sit for 1 day before using.
.
My honey found me this soap container with about
1 use of detergent left in it. I plan to reuse it
and put my homemade soap mixture in it.
No, not all the homemade detergent will fit in this
bottle but will make it much easier for myself to use
and move around rather than moving a 5 gallon bucket.
I will just refill it with more as it gets low.
I thought it was a neat bottle because you could
sit sideways and push the button to dispense the soap.
It also came with a cup that is about the right size
for measuring my soap for each load.
Use a little more than a half cup per load.

----------------------------------------

.
I got my latest issue of All You yesterday.
In the magazine was a recipe for homemade dish washing detergent!

--------------------------------------------

9:00-9:15AM

I rarely use dryer sheets anymore and had
a couple extra boxes in the basement.
Rather than to throw them out I go around
and put a sheet in each register vent.
It makes the whole house smell good!
It also helps to filter out any dust that
may have escaped through the furnace filter.
.

-------------------------------------------------

10:45AM

I took a canning jar and filled it 2/3rds the way
full with water and 1/3rd fabric softener.
I then cut a small sponge in half and put
both pieces into the jar and screwed the lid on.
Each time I put a load of laundry in the dryer
I will remove the sponges from the jar and wring
them out then throw them in with the clothes.

I will try my darndest to keep track of how long
this lasts by doing it this way.
I will let you know when I run out
of my 1 liter bottle of fabric softener.

------------------------------------------------

I saw these cookies someone did for Halloween.
While it didn't say how they decorated it
I figured you could frost each cookie with white
store bought frosting leaving a space unfrosted for the eyes,
put a dab of frosting on M&M's
and add to cookies for eyes.
Take fork tines and rake through the frosting
to look like the mummies rags.

Did you know?

I thought I was doing so good starting to buy
1% milk instead of 2%.
Don't know if we will ever be able to do skim milk.
Anyway I looked on the nutritional label last night
and saw that for every cup of milk you drink
there is 12 grams of sugar!!
That to me sounds like allot of sugar we are consuming
just from milk!

I found yet another contest to consider :0P
